About Helicon

Helicon Literary & Arts Magazine was the brainchild of three students in Mary Kinzie’s 1979 poetry sequence. Lisa Getter, Christina Calvit, and Michael Steele wanted to provide Northwestern with a regularly published literary magazine that could showcase the artistic work of the student body. Helicon began in and is affliated with Chapin, the Humanities Residential College, and is funded by the Office of Residential Academic Initiatives. The first issue appeared in the spring of 1980.

Helicon’s 40th anniversary will arrive in spring 2020.  Pictured above is Lisa Getter, co-founder of Helicon, who sat down for an interview with Helicon in honor of its 40th anniversary.

Listen to co-founder Lisa Getter tell the story of Helicon’s creation and her life post-graduation as a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist:

Our name
Mount Helicon
was the home of the Muses, the site of their sacred springs, and the foreground to the exploits of figures such as Narcissus and Pegasus.
