When I first joined Helicon Literary & Arts Magazine, it was the fall of 2020. On-campus housing had been canceled, classes were entirely online, and as a freshman, it was nearly impossible to meet anyone. This magazine was one of the first places I found community at Northwestern, and throughout my four years on its staff, Helicon has been my greatest inspiration, passion, and love. From reading each awe-inspiring piece we’ve received, to discussing submissions with our bright and thoughtful staff, to putting each issue out into the world, Helicon has enriched every moment of my time here. As such, I am thrilled to share our Spring 2024 magazine with you. In these pages, you will find meditations on family, moments of tranquility, bursts of vibrant light, and so much more. As you read on, I encourage you to let these pieces enrich your lives as much as they have ours, and to let them inspire you to make art of your own as well.

An incredible community of friends, family, peers, and alumni has supported Helicon for over forty years, and I would like to thank every person who has helped breathe life into our pages. Thank you, deeply, to Northwestern’s Creative Writing Department, whose sponsorship and guidance has brought our magazine to new heights. To everyone who has believed in our mission, and to the many generous donors who have helped us over the years. To our contributors, whose words and works continue to move us, and to our readers, who plunge into our pages and cherish these artists. All my love goes out to our wonderful staff, which has put so much love into constructing this magazine, and to the members of our executive and editorial boards, who have cultivated such a magical space on campus. I cannot wait to see what all of you do next.

Finally, I would like to thank our faculty advisor, Brian Bouldrey, whose love for Helicon has been unwavering since he was Editor-in-Chief himself. Thank you so much for your wholehearted dedication to Northwestern’s artistic and literary community.

Throughout my time on Helicon, I have called our magazine a celebration. This campus is home to a plethora of infinitely talented artists and writers, and it has been an honor to read, engage with, and appreciate everybody’s work over the years. As my time as Editor-in-Chief comes to a close, I implore everyone reading to continue taking in the world and all its art. Get inspired, get creative, and keep on celebrating. There is so much out there to admire.

This has been Lily Glaubinger, Editor-in-Chief.
