I’m me in this dream
and the crocodiles are back
and we’re all at the
Kroger shopping. The sign says
“cheap scrap” and the
scrap is cheap, since
you can get a dozen
for four and four for
a dozen, fresh off the
heap either way and still
and cold like a dead thing.
I’m checked out
in the self-checkout line,
watching as the
workers build babel out of soup
cans and soda boxes. But the
crocodiles push it down, tear
it with their teeth until day breaks
like a sheet of ice
dropped from a height on
the concrete floor. Nobody
pinch me. I need to
get the ice cream home
before it melts.
