Natasha Sondakh
she was too yellow for pale people
so they told her to speak to stars
instead. her mouth dried up the first
time, running out of commas to use
and half words to say.
she lay in a bed of toadstools like a meteor
decaying in mist controlled by
sweat dollars and cigarette smoke
that ate into the stutter of her body’s
broken grammar:
a saffron skin that coats her
mellifluous thoughts
and signals for
pale bullets
to split her open
